Decoding and Encoding English Words: A Handbook for Language Tutors
Published in Spiral-bound by York Press (September, 2000)
Author: Thomas Baldwin Jones
Average review score:

Excellent Resource!
As an English teacher of over eight years, I found this to be one of the most useful resources for explaining phonics, roots, prefixes, suffixes and foreign word origins. I would highly recommend this book to teachers, tutors and parents. Wonderful!!

Excellent Book!
This is an excellent book for english teachers, tutors, or simply those interested in the mechanics of the english language. I found the last pages of the book--which contain cutout flashcards of the various vowels, consonants, and other common word segments (e.g. ble, tial, gle)--invaluable. Using these cards, I was able to help a student with reading difficulties dramatically increase his reading efficiency. The book also contains important exceptions to phonetic rules that pop up in the english language and which stem from greek, latin, and other languages. This is one of those books that when you've studied a while, you say "hey this english language is screwy, but now I understand why, and I know where all the exceptions to the rules lay, and know how to make well-educated stabs at pronouncations and spellings. The layout of the text could be, perhaps, better arranged. I think it would be better to have placed the flashcards in the front, and have an explaination of how to use them. Other than that, this book is awesome!

Diary of a Humiliated Man
Published in Paperback by Brookline Books (October, 1996)
Authors: Felix De Azua, Julie Jones, and Felix De Azua
Average review score:

Looking for something different? Buy this.
This book promises a refreshing change from the often banal offerings of American literature. It delivers. It is a peculiar little book--and one of the best I've read in a while. It reveals itself quite slowly, but besides being a modest little book and full of hope, it is a well written and clever examination the quest for meaning in modern life. Stylistically, I would place it with Sartre's "Nausea", Dostoevsky's "Notes from Underground," and Hamsun's "Hunger". Philosophically, the story is more optimisitic and more modern. If you enjoyed those, give this book a try.

not banal, not banana
The narrator of this fine book attempts banality, but comes nowhere close to it. The writing is original and fresh. The dialogue is handled very well indeed, and it is a cosmopolitan voice (oh, yes!) that speaks to us from these pages. And a voice that finally manages to escape the confines of literature and present itself as pure and unfettered. The book is funny too, in parts. And did I mention the dialogue--it is really well written. Heck, I enjoyed this book a ton.

Digi Charat (Digi Charat Series)
Published in Paperback by Viz Communications (May, 2003)
Authors: Koge Dombo, Koge-Donbo, and Gerard Jones
Average review score:

Yes, finally!
Di Gi Charat is so cute, it's amazing to me that it's been overlooked in the US for so long, and that someone hasn't picked up the rights to the TV series, especially now that new seasons have come out. Well, now that the Comic anthology is coming out, possibly there will be enough interest to do that. This is really cute and if you like cute, and super short comics, this is a good buy!

Dejiko nyo!
A faithful translation from the Japanese. Excellent art, amazing to see this in English. If you have a passing interest in Kogedonbo or Di Gi Charat, do yourself a favor and get this.

Disappearing Acts (Herculeah Jones Mysteries)

Author: Betsy Cromer Byars

Disappearing Acts
I have read many of the Herculeah Jones Mysteries but this one is my favorint! It had a certain pull to the book some would say the same effect of Harry Potter. With this having two stories to it you had to keep on reading more if you wanted to know what was going to happen in the other story. An exilent book! Read it!

I Love It
I love the book Dissapering Acts. It is such a great book. Usually I am good at putting books down but this I could not put down ! It is so exciting and you never know what way they'll solve it . Every chapter in the book is so exciting! Now I am a big fan of Betsy Byars!

Dispersed City of the Plains
Published in Paperback by Monthly Review Press (December, 1998)
Authors: Harris Stone, Joan Stone, J. William Carswell, Jone Stone, and William Carswell
Average review score:

The thoughts of one of the wisest Critics
I was a student of Harris Stone's for several classes during my career at KU's School of Architecture and Urban Design in the 1980's. The book "Dispersed City of the Plains" is just so very typical of Harris. Harris was one of the best Critics (that's the code word for Architecture Teacher, Professor, etc.) that I ever had. He was truely wise. Stone had a way of looking beyond what was fashionable to print in the Professional Journals to see the truth in the Architecture. Harris always taught us, as students in Kansas, to be proud of our herritage. He had the ability to see the art in what others disregarded as mundane and below their recognition. Harris was a proponent for the masses, the end users of Architecture. It didn't matter to him how great a building was proclaimed if it didn't serve it's purpose for it's users. Stone's books always remind us to design for the people, and the environment, not the Journals.

Poignant, provocative thoughts on the Great Plains
This is a challenging, original analysis of the meaning of the built environment of the Great Plains. The author begins much the way that Walter Prescott Webb did in his pioneering work on the same subject, by analyzing the building blocks that organize space and the economy of the region, in this instance grain elevators, barbed wire, and windmills. He then moves through types of housing, and communities from hamlet to major city.

Harris Stone's basic thesis is threefold: 1. The Great Plains experienced a fundamentally different pattern of settlement than the Eastern U.S., because the land was subdivided before settlers arrived; 2. European models of city form are not valid for analyzing the built environment of the Plains; 3. Instead, the settlement pattern of the Plains is a work in progress that anticipates the impact of today's information-age economy, and it should be evaluated accordingly.

The author's text is handwritten, with his own drawings illustrating his points. His ideas are spare and challenge the reader to participate and "fill in the blanks." His style is somewhat akin to the way Jane Jacobs analyzes city life, while his conclusions contrast dramatically with hers.

There is also a poignance that permeates the book, because Harris Stone was dying of cancer as he wrote it. Too weak to finish preparation of the text for publishing, his wife and colleagues at the University of Kansas School of Architecture completed the final few pages, in a different style of handwriting and illustration. One mourns the loss of so original a thinker, as one is simultaneously stimulated by his text.

Divas Las Vegas
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Random House of Canada Ltd. (May, 2001)
Author: Jones
Average review score:

Hilarious
This is a great book; extremely funny with great characters. You will love Jamie and her pals as they explore Las Vegas and hit the big-time. A really excellent, beach novel - if you like British "Chick-Lit" you will not be disappointed.

Get ready for a wild ride in Las Vegas
Jamie Miller and Izzy Ingham, British girls, best friends, and 27-year-old singles, are determined to kick "Project Presley" into action -- they fly to Las Vegas to find a husband there. No matter that Izzy already has a fiancé back at home or that Jamie is still haunted by the memories of her first love, the girls finally want to meet their dream man. While Izzy seems to be content with any rich man, Jamie wishes for a soulmate. On their "manhunt," the girlfriends fall for strippers, businessmen, Elvis, a knight, and a merman -- but does each of them end up with their Prince Charming?

"Divas Las Vegas" is the first book of the British author Belinda Jones -- and what a debut novel she wrote! She captures the essence of Las Vegas as entertainment capital of the world, using that extraordinary city as background of her protagonists' quest for love -- and for finding themselves. The result is a hilarious, romantic, and utterly entertaining book which I read twice in the same year even though romances aren't my first reading choice. Throughout the story, Belinda Jones often refers to current popular culture, thus making her novel more authentic and easy to relate to.

The book's bright pink cover with its title written in capital pastel-colored letters and the glittering stars are a real eyecatcher -- the first hint of glamorous Las Vegas. Normally, I don't choose (or judge) books by their covers, but "Divas Las Vegas" did spark my interest because of this outstanding cover. Fortunately, the cover holds its promise, so don't hesitate to pick up your own book copy.

Don't Drown in the Carpool
Published in Paperback by Indelible Press (01 January, 2001)
Authors: Mark Berkowitz and Verna Noel Jones
Average review score:

Parents Need Fun, too!
As Dr. B says it right on Page 1: "Healthy parent-child relationships don't just happen, they are created. Like any worthwhile endeavor, raising responsible & responsive children requires dedication, hard work & a willingness to experiment with creative approaches to parenting challenges."

Instead of simply bossing your kids about, throwing as many orders at them as they throw tantrums at you, try a little cooperation - you'll be as surprised as they with the results!

This easy-to-read, enjoyable little book, explains the ins & outs of the impasses parents get into with their children, & then gives you lifelines of ideas & scripts with which you can transform the quality of your relationships with your spouse, as well as your kids.

Worth every penny you spend. I highly recommend you give copies to every parent you know who is underwhelmed by the joy of parenting, overwhelmed by their ratpack, or looking forward, with either dread or exhilaration, to becoming parents.

An Exceptional Parenting Tool
This highly entertaining book deals thoughtfully with the most precious of relationships - that of parents and children. It provides realistic approaches to improving family communication, cooperation and harmony. Dr. Berkowitz presents valuable insights and advice in a straightforward yet humorous fashion; his techniques are appropriate for dealing with children ages toddlerhood through adolescence. Dr. Berkowitz's tools can be effectively introduced into any family, helping families to modify their own personal style, while retaining their own special uniqueness -- unlike many parenting books which dictate the latest current "parenting fad".

Okay, so I loved the book. But what really counts is this: I have used several of Dr. Berkowitz's approaches with my own children, ages 3 and 5 years. Results: successful cooperation (with some surprised looks on their little faces!). My 3 year old daughter has even begun anticipating my intentions and will repeat something I have previously said to her (that came straight from Dr. B's book), before I get a chance to say it! She smiles knowingly and is proud that she can sometimes be responsible for her own self-discipline.

I highly recommend this book to parents, grandparents and to all of those who give care to children.

Dow Jones-Irwin Guide to Fine Gems and Jewelry
Published in Hardcover by Richard d Irwin (May, 1986)
Author: David Marcum
Average review score:

Excellent information on diamonds and colored gemstones
This is the best book I have ever seen on diamonds, gemstones and jewelry. I contains excellent information on what to look for in each category of gemstones. It also contains great photo examples of properly cut stones and common problem areas. It explains the independent lab grading process and shows how to read the grading reports.

A well researched treasure
One of the best books ever written if you are interested in collecting or investing in diamonds and colored gemstones. Discusses basic gemology, an analysis of the most commonly traded gemstones, colored gemstone and diamond grading with laboratory grading reports, gemstone treatments, pricing cycles, gemstone investing, gemstone markups and appraisals. Although this book is a little out of date, it is an excellent resource for beginners.
